About Us

What is the St. Thomas More Society?

The St. Thomas More Society is a student organization at the University of Virginia School of Law. Its purpose is to provide a place of prayer and fellowship for Catholic law students. Throughout the year we host numerous events, providing members the opportunity to grow as students, lawyers, and most importantly, as followers of Jesus Christ.

Who is St. Thomas More?

St. Thomas More is the patron of lawyers, and of the Society. Thomas More was Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII. Refusing the Oath of Supremacy, which declared the King head of the Church in England rather than the Pope, he was put to death in 1535 and won the glorious crown of martyrdom. His final words are said to have been “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”

How do I join?

The Society is open to all UVA law students. Press the big button below and fill out the Google Form it takes you to! Alternatively, show up to any of our events, talk to one of our members, or email one of our board members on the “Leadership” page.

I do not care very much what men say of me, provided that God approves of me.
— Thomas More, A Letter to Erasmus, 1532.
